Wine O'Clock News
WineChap’s round-up of bits of booze related news and gossip from the past week…
  • Tragic news for NEDs as Commission’s recommendations could lead to Buckfast ban.  Amusingly this foul but warming tonic, a favourite amongst Scotland’s under 13s and criminal and homeless fraternities, is coming under the cosh for its caffeine levels - rather than for being repellent. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/10164507.stm
  • Having noticed a sudden abundance of white vans and Ford Escorts sporting the England flag, we can only assume that they too are supporting “English Wine Week”; crack open a bottle of Nyetimber and stiffen that upper lip. http://www.englishwineweek.co.uk/
  • 1865 saw the end of the American Civil war, publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the births of William Butler Yeats and Rudyard Kipling and most notably the opening of the Langham.  Next week travel back in time with them as they celebrate their 145th birthday by serving afternoon tea for just 7 pence (Equivalent to the original price tag of one shilling and sixpence) http://londonist.com/2010/06/7p_afternoon_tea_at_the_langham.php
  • The marking of historic dates continues – The Tommyfield, now open in Kennington, timed its launch to coincide with the150th anniversary of the first British chip shop at Tommyfield market in Oldham.  A “proper pub” it wouldn’t ordinarily catch WineChap’s eye, but we can always be charmed by anyone serving Bolly at just £55.95 a pop. http://www.thetommyfield.com/index.php London Appetizer - review
  • It’s not been a terrific year for Laurent Perrier who has seen profits drop by 44%.  Now Stéphane Tsassis, Laurent Perrier chairman for just 18 months, has quit for “personal reasons”. http://www.decanter.com/news/298714.html
