WineChap’s round-up of bits of booze related news and gossip from the past week…
“World’s oldest champagne’ found on Baltic seabed”
Why invest in a temperature controlled wine cellar? Why not just sink your stock! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-10673322
Previously the oldest Champagne opened recently was a bottle of Perrier Jouet 1825, tasted by an exceptionally lucky group of critics in March last year. It’s possible that this new find, believed to have been made between 1772 and 1785, could sell for £40,000-£50,000 a bottle.
“New to 1 Lombard Street”
Matthew Mawtus (formerly restaurant manager of the Orrery) has recently been appointed Manager/Sommelier at favoured city haunt 1 Lombard Street. On his appointment Matthew said ““I also want to continue 1 Lombard Street’s pledge to sell top wines at really competitive prices, and to ensuring we have a wide selection of wines available by the carafe and glass.” We look forward to seeing how Matthew will keep this an exciting and engaging list. www.1lombardstreet.com
“Global warming ‘boon’ for Riesling”
WineChap may have to trade in the G-Wiz for a hummer if the reports that claim global warming could prove a boon for Riesling turn out to be true… http://www.decanter.com/news/300193.html We may well need those increasingly warm extra wine growing regions for producing Riesling if plans for the 500ft bridge over the Mosel aren’t stopped. Aromatics of diesel may become less of an analogy and more of a reality. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/wine/article7103850.ece
