On Asimov’s Tail: “A Thin Field of American Gewürztraminers”

Well,
this week’s column won’t exactly inspire a supermarket sweep of domestic Gewürztraminer. It’s a bit of a depressing read, but one that does insist that there is a silver lining on the dark cloud that hovered over many of the 20 Gewürztraminers tasted. Asimov insists that the Anderson Valley is an excellent place to seek out great Gewurztraminer, though many are difficult to find (only one from this region made it into the tasting and unfortunately, it did not excite), and embeds a few suggested wines that he has been consistently impressed with. So, instead of giving you all 9 wines that the panel picked out, we’ll set you up with the top 5 along with 6 of 7 additional producers (we were not able to locate the Gewürztraminer from Bedrock Wine Company) that Asimov believes to be worth seeking out.
Here’s the skinny:
1. Gewürztraminer, Oregon, Umpqua Valle 2007, Brandborg
2. Gewürztraminer, New York, Finger Lakes 2007, Dr. Konstantin Frank
3. Gewürztraminer, California, Monterey County 2007, Thomas Fogarty
4. Gewürztraminer, California, Russian River Valley 2008, Hook & Ladder
5. Gewurztraminer, New York, Finger Lakes, 2008, Anthony Road
Asimov’s suggested wines not tasted by the panel:
Gewürztraminer 2006, Stony Hill
Gewürztraminer 2006, Corazón (Cathy Corison)
Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer 2006, Navarro
Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer 2007, Lazy Creek
Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer 2007, Londer
Anderson Valley Gewürztraminer 2007, Husch
