Yesterday Asimov penned what we believe to be one his finest columns in recent memory. The topic: Provencal Rose. He argues that these wines are more than just seasonal quaffers that can escape expectation. They represent the terroir of this gifted area of coastal France, and the best of them, as Asimov points out, can be transporting. “You really don’t need to see the seaside shimmering in the heat to enjoy a bottle, or smell the lavender, garlic, anise and saffron. It’s all there in the glass, along with the blues, pinks and yellows of a pastel sky, and the sounds of the motor scooters chugging over the cobblestones. Those are my images, at least. Good rosés call forth from each of us their own.” Drink a bottle of Tempier or Pradeaux with a few years behind it and it’s hard to argue. Same goes for the Peyrassol, but for different reasons. It’s not one to put down, but it is a perennial favorite and one that carries with it a very specific sense of nostalgia.
Now, on to the panel’s picks and where you can find them here in NYC:
