Tempier Obscura

Post image for Tempier Obscura Domaine Tempier is one of Bandol’s leading producers, famous for finding a way to skillfully translate the spitefulness of the Mourvèdre grape into red wines that display uncommon finesse and rosés that boast a prettiness not often matched. Sadly, rosé is often seen as a juvenile seasonal libation—one meant to be drunk in madras as soon as the temp hits 70. It seems a drink plagued by its pink. But if there’s one thing Tempier does well, it’s to remind us that rosé can sometimes defy the stereotypes. It is Provencal rosé at its finest: delicate, impeccably balanced, and downright statuesque. It conjures Emily Dickinson, doilies, eyelets, Peter Rabbit, and porcelain sleigh beds. Even with the dollhouse charm of 2-year-old (which, in rosé years, lands it right around pre-teen), it seems to possess a grown-up wisdom. The organization of its parts is anything but childish, and the delicate images it conjures along the way feel far-reaching.  It has all the charm and lacey magnetism we crave from rosé, but it also shows the structure and awareness of a lady wise beyond her years. Pair with: Edgar Degas Two Dancers on Stage 1874 Why: Degas was one of the most important painters of Impressionism. Distinctive for his desire to capture fluid action, Degas chose ballet dancers as his primary subject for the better part of his early career. Here these two young dancers exhibit a sense of youthful innocence, even playfulness, all contained in a highly developed awareness of the physical body. And, we’re pretty sure that’s Tempier in the foreground. Camera Obscura “Swans” from My Maudlin Career Why: Camera Obscura’s latest album finds Tracyanne Campbell ruminating with a bit more lyrical maturity. She explains relationships within the context of responsibility and surrender instead of the juvenile (albeit very catchy) elementary love stories that dominate Camera Obscura’s previous releases. Growth spurts aside, however, Campbell’s dulcet vocals paired with the band’s accessible melodies still bubble over with their simple magnetism—the perfect combination of pinkness and perspective.
