Bordeaux 09: Saint-Julien

Bordeaux 09 St Julien Historically WineChap’s favourite appellation (although recently Margaux has been running it close), Saint-Julien did not disappoint in ’09.  The wines in general might not have shown the same mineral drive and refinement of their brother Pauillacs  but there was plenty to love here, from the terrific power and intensity of Ducru-Beaucaillou to the seductively perfumed sexiness of Leoville Las Cases, of which my notes state ‘the succulent finish lingers like heartbreak’. WineChap’s Top Picks: Leoville Las Cases (another contender for wine of the vintage), Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Barton, Leoville Poyferre (the most over-performing Chateau of ’09), Langoa Barton, Lagrange, Talbot, Fourcas Dumont (from 2010 re-named Fourcas-Borie)

Moulis-en-Medoc:

A good performance from this overlooked appellation – which clearly benefited from the super-ripe Merlot to yield some cheekily attractive wines. WineChap’s Top Picks: Poujeaux, Maucaillou We will be offering a WineChap selection en primeur offer when prices are released later in the month.  In the interim for full tasting notes and more details on this extraordinary vintage – as well as to request specific allocations of certain wines from our negociant contacts please email tom@winechap.com
